Michael Owen sends message to Man United fans about Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Michael Owen says Henrikh Mkhitaryan's quiet form this season is down to Manchester United's lack of width
Michael Owen believes that Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s inconsistent performances for Manchester United this season are down to the Red Devils’ style of play.
The Armenia international has struggled to deliver on a consistent basis for the Red Devils this term since arriving at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
Mkhitaryan made a slow start to life at Old Trafford but found some better form in the second half of the season.
However, most would still agree that the 28-year-old is yet to hit top form for the Red Devils following his switch last summer.
Mkhitaryan scored Manchester United’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
And former Manchester United striker Owen gave his take on Mkhitaryan’s debut season at Old Trafford after the game.
Owen told BT Sport: “Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a classic example in terms of getting more width. How can Angel Di Maria be a great player at every team he plays for but at Man United he is a flop?
“It’s the style of play that hinders a number 10. Mkhitaryan was so consistent at Dortmund. He was creating and scoring every week. He looks really inconsistent now.
“Once you get width and add your Giggs and Beckhams, it is far easier to get a ball into a number 10.
“Man United have been playing without enough width and pace.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table in Jose Mourinho’s first season at the club.
