Rio Ferdinand: What Man United need to start doing under Jose Mourinho
Manchester United legend wants to see Jose Mourinho's side punish teams in the Premier League next season
Rio Ferdinand has challenged Manchester United to start punishing teams under Jose Mourinho next season.
The Red Devils won the Europa League trophy for the first time on Wednesday night thanks to a 2-0 win against Eredivisie giants Ajax.
Goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan helped to secure silverware in Europe and a place in next season’s Champions League.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table in their first season under Mourinho.
The Red Devils drew a staggering 15 games in the Premier League over the course of the 2016-17 season as Mourinho’s side struggled up front.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand wants to see the Red Devils side show a more ruthless streak in the Premier League next season.
“This team hasn’t been able to spread its wings,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“When they’ve had teams on the ropes, they haven’t punished teams.
“They have put teams to sleep. They have got the goal and sat there. Teams get confidence and get back into games.”
Manchester United won the Community Shield with a 2-1 win against champions Leicester City in Wembley back in August.
The Red Devils won the EFL Cup back in February thanks to a 3-2 victory over Southampton in the League Cup final.
