Shaka Hislop has backed Manchester United’s reported pursuit of Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move to sign the Serbia midfielder in recent days as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.
The latest reports in the media have suggested that Chelsea would be open to selling Matic because they are closing in on the signing of Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
And former goalkeeper Hislop believes that the move would make sense for the Red Devils, with Matic having played under Mourinho during the pair’s time together at Chelsea.
Hislop told ESPN FC: “There’s no question in my mind that Manchester United are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder, who can also get forward.
“Given how good Matic was, given his relationship with Jose Mourinho, that for me is a perfect fit.”
It remains to be seen whether Matic will complete a move to Manchester United by a transfer would certainly make sense, with the Red Devils believed to be on the lookout for a long-term successor for veteran star Michael Carrick.
Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after they won the Europa League under Mourinho last term.
