Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United have to embrace the challenge from their bitter rivals Liverpool next season.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table this season following a mixed campaign under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s replacement back in May 2016 after Manchester United missed out on a place in the Champions League.

The Red Devils could still secure a place in Europe’s premier club competition despite finishing behind Liverpool in the league table if Manchester United win the Europa League on Wednesday night.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is expected to strengthen his Reds side in the summer transfer window ahead of a return to the Champions League, which could make the task more difficult for Manchester United next term.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the threat Liverpool and Manchester City pose to his former club, Manchester United legend Ferguson said:

“They have always been threats. You have to accept the challenge. If you can’t accept the challenge, you shouldn’t be there.

“When Arsenal and Chelsea came along, we relished the challenge.

“It’s what Man United should be. Man United should accept the challenge. It’s good for you.”
