Paul Merson has warned Manchester United that losing David De Gea would be a blow.

The Red Devils are facing a battle to keep De Gea beyond the summer transfer window amid interest from Champions League finalists Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho overlooked De Gea in his Manchester United side for the Europa League final against Eredivisie side Ajax on Wednesday night.

Indeed, Manchester United manager Mourinho opted to start with number two goalkeeper Sergio Romero for the European showpiece.

De Gea has been regularly linked with a move to Real Madrid over the past three or four season and came close to joining in 2015 before his proposed transfer fell through.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson warned Manchester United that losing De Gea will be a big blow.

“There have been games they dominated and just couldn’t score, so they are not a million miles off, but I think they are short of players,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“And will David de Gea stay? He has saved them a lot of points over the last few seasons.”

De Gea moved to Manchester United in a £17m deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table after a disappointing campaign.
