Andre Villas-Boas admitted Tottenham Hotspur were punished for being wasteful after Leeds United knocked Spurs out of the FA Cup at Elland Road.

Leeds striker Luke Varney gave the home side a 15th-minute lead when the forward raced clear and showed composure to beat experienced Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Neil Warnock’s side doubled their lead five minutes after half-time, with Ross McCormack outpacing England defender Steven Caulker and curling his finish past Friedel.

The visitors did halve the deficit when Gareth Bale’s cross was turned past Leeds shot stopper Jamie Ashdown by Clint Dempsey with over 30 minutes remaining.

But the Championship outfit held on to claim a Premier League scalp and book their place in the fifth round.

“Leeds made the most of their opportunities,” Villas-Boas said. “It was good to come back into the game but we maybe could have done a little better.

“Leeds were really up for it. We had some opportunities to go 2-2, but maybe not too clear-cut.

“Our second half was definitely better than the first, but we could have done better not to go 2-0 down.

“Unfortunately today we missed Defoe, who always gives us an option, through injury, but we’ll have him back for the Norwich game.”
