David O’Leary has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if Arsene Wenger was still manager of Arsenal next season.

The Gunners boss has endured a difficult 2016-17 season after poor performances in the Champions League and the Premier League.

Arsenal lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in Europe’s top competition to crash out at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season.

The north London side also suffered defeats at the hands of Chelsea and Liverpool during the same period to see the title bid fall apart.

Arsenal restored some pride on Saturday afternoon thanks to a 2-1 win against Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Wenger’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, although the 67-year-old is thought to be on the brink of signing a new two-year deal.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk about Wenger’s future, former Arsenal defender O’Leary said:

“He might not be but I’d be very surprised if he isn’t in charge [next season].”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04, while the Gunners came closest to winning the Champions League in 2006 after a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the final.
