Lionel Messi has vowed to convince Oasis to re-form should Argentina win the World Cup in South Africa.
The Ballon d’Or winner wants the British band to perform at a special celebration party if Diego Maradona can guide his squad to a third World Cup success.
Messi revealed he has become obsessed with the Manchester band since compatriot Carlos Tevez introduced him to the work of Noel and Liam Gallagher.
“Ever since he has been playing in Manchester, Carlos has told me how great Oasis was,” Messi told The Sun. “I kept promising I would listen to them, but I never got round to it.
“On the plane on the way to the World Cup Carlos made me listen to their first two albums.
“I have to say I wasn’t expecting much but it is some of the best material I have ever heard. They are absolutely amazing.”
The Barcelona star has so far failed to open his account in South Africa. He has, however, shown glimpses of the form which helped guide his club to a second successive La Liga title.
Messi revealed that Oasis have played a large role during the competition so far.
“I have been listening to their stuff on my iPod dock in the hotel room, on the way to the matches and in the dressing room,” he added.
“I can’t believe it’s taken me all this time to finally listen to them.”
“We have agreed that if we win the World Cup we want to fly them over to Argentina for our celebration party. We just need them to name their price.”
On 28 August 2009 Noel Gallagher left Oasis, citing he could no longer work with his brother Liam.
Should Messi help Argentina to World Cup glory, he will arguably face a harder task convincing the volatile brothers to put aside their differences.
