Brendan Rodgers admitted Liverpool needed to make reinforcements before the transfer window closed after Arsenal condemned the Reds to their second defeat of the season on Sunday.

Despite a promising start at Anfield, the home side fell behind when Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla combined to devastating effect on a rapid counter-attack, with the German striker tucking his finish past Pepe Reina.

Liverpool struggled to manufacture any clear-cut opportunities on the Arsenal goal, and Santi Cazorla secured three points for Arsene Wenger’s side with a powerful strike which Reina could only parry into own net.

The Reds were linked with both Clint Dempsey and Daniel Sturridge after offloading Andy Carroll to West Ham on a season-long loan, but the Merseysiders failed to recruit either before Friday’s transfer deadline.

“We all know we needed reinforcements and the players needed help, but the window is shut, we can’t do anything about it now,” said Rodgers.

“My only concentration is with the players that are here, and they’ve been fantastic. They’ve given me absolutely everything every day and I couldn’t ask for any more from them.

“We’ve got what we’ve got. A lot of young players are going to get an opportunity.

“Raheem Sterling, I thought, was terrific today.

“Joe Allen and Cazorla were the two best players on the field, the two little guys, the technicians.

“We’ve got some other young players and that’s where we’re at. I’m not here to cry. I can’t do anything about it. The reality is we’ve got the group we’ve got.

He added: “What has happened has happened, we’ll reflect on it as a club and hopefully come January and the next window we can transition the group that allows us to compete.”
