Liverpool 0 Chelsea 2: Jose Mourinho insists that his Chelsea side are not back in the title race despite win
Jose Mourinho insisted that Chelsea are not back in the Premier League title race, despite watching his side battle to an impressive victory against leaders Liverpool.
The Blues took the lead on the stroke of half-time at Anfield when Steven Gerrard slipped and allowed Demba Ba to slot past Simon Mignolet.
The champions will be City or Liverpool so we have nothing to celebrate
Joe Allen and Luis Suarez forced saves after the break, before substitute Willian scored in injury time after Fernando Torres unselfishly squared the ball to the Brazilian.
The victory left Chelsea two points behind the Reds with two games left to play – but Mourinho is adamant that his side’s title hopes were already over before Sunday’s clash.
“Now we can say we won both matches against the champions,” said Mourinho. If it’s Liverpool, we won both. If it’s City, we won both.
“With these three points we need one point to finish third. It was a good season for us and an evolution in many aspects of this team.
“The champions will be City or Liverpool so we have nothing to celebrate.”
Mourinho was delighted with his side’s battling display on Merseyside as they became the first team to beat Liverpool in the league since November.
“Obviously many people would be expecting us to come here and lose 3-0 or 5-0 like others,” he said. “Many people think it was impossible to get this result.
“But the boys had an amazing performance so I’m so happy for them and for the fans. This is the spirit we always want at Chelsea football club.”
