Jamie Carragher admitted he was pleased to end his Liverpool career with three points after an emotional send-off for the centre-half against relegated Queens Park Rangers at Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho, who arrived in a £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in January, scored his third Premier League goal with a superb long-range effort in the 23rd minute.

Carragher, making his 737th and final appearance for the club, came close from a corner to scoring his sixth Reds goal, while Loic Remy had the best chance for the visitors in the opening period.

The Reds defender scored on his debut in 1997 and the 35-year-old had a first-time effort hit the post with Hoops keeper Rob Green beaten in the second half.

But Carragher was forced to settle for a 1-0 win and a consolatory clean sheet as the defender called time on his 16-year Liverpool career.

“It was an emotional day for myself, friends and family. It was important to get a win and that’s what we managed to do,” Carragher said.

And on his shot hitting the post, the former England international added: “I scored on my debut and it would have been nice if my shot [which hit the post] had gone in. I’m just getting the hang of shooting in my final game. It’s a bit late!!”
