Alan Shearer reacts to Virgil van Dijk’s ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool FC debut in 2-1 win over Everton
The Premier League legend is full of praise for Liverpool FC signing Virgil van Dijk after his brilliant Anfield debut
Alan Shearer hailed Virgil van Dijk’s “unbelievable” start to his Liverpool FC career after the January signing scored a late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.
Liverpool FC boss opted to hand his record signing his debut in the FA Cup third round after the Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal from Southampton last week.
Van Dijk started alongside African centre-half Joel Matip in the Liverpool FC side as the world’s most expensive defender looked to help his new club book their place in the fourth round.
James Milner broke the deadlock in the first half from the penalty spot before Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled in the second half following a sweeping counter-attacking move.
However, Van Dijk wasn’t to be denied a win on his first Liverpool FC appearance and the towering centre-half steered a header past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the final 10 minutes.
Former Newcastle striker Shearer hailed a special night for the Liverpool FC signing after the defender’s dramatic winner in front of The Kop at Anfield.
“Absolutely magnificent,” Shearer told BBC Sport.
“There was pressure on him straight away before he had even kicked a ball. They bought him to shore up the defence, not to go and score the winning goal with five minutes to go! But what an unbelievable night for him.”
Liverpool FC will welcome unbeaten Premier League leaders Manchester City in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Saturday 14 January.
