Liverpool 4 Tottenham 0: Brendan Rodgers insists the Reds aren't feeling under pressure and aren't thinking about the title
Brendan Rodgers rubbished claims that Liverpool are feeling the pressure as the Premier League title race nears its conclusion after an emphatic win over Tottenham at Anfield.
Liverpool surged into an early second-minute lead after defender Glen Johnson’s low cross was deflected past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris by Spurs captain Younes Kaboul.
We don’t feel it [the pressure]. We’re very confident with how we play
Luis Suarez scored his 29th goal of the season to double the home side’s lead before Philippe Coutinho 55th-minute effort ended Tottenham’s chances of getting a foothold in the game.
Jordan Henderson sealed a 4-0 victory with a low free-kick 15 minutes from time, with the Reds moving to the top of the table and two points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who lost at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
“The dream is for our supporters. They want to win the title and they’ve been a long time waiting,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.
“It’s not in my thinking to be honest.”
Liverpool were noticeably nervy in the closing stages of their 2-1 victory over Sunderland in midweek, leading to claims that the Reds are feeling the pressure of the title race.
However, Rodgers is adamant that his Liverpool side are nerve-free ahead of a trip to Upton Park next weekend before games against title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.
“We don’t feel it. We’re very confident with how we play. The other night, there was probably a little bit made of us being anxious, which wasn’t the case,” Rodgers added.
“The game was tight and it was 2-1. Tottenham had a little spell at the end of the game which was similar to what Sunderland had but the difference was we were 4-0 up.
“You see the confidence in how the players pass the ball, the movement, the intensity of our pressure, to know that they are very calm and focused on the job.”
He added: “It was an immense performance and I’m very proud of the team.”
