Brendan Rodgers has backed Daniel Sturridge to become a “great player” for Liverpool despite dropping the striker to the bench in recent weeks.

The 23-year-old made an eye-catching start to his Reds career, netting five goals in 10 appearances, after completing a £12m move from Chelsea in the January transfer window.

However, the Reds boss opted to leave Sturridge on the bench for their recent Premier League games against Aston Villa and West Ham United despite his current form.

And Rodgers revealed he wanted to protect the forward from injury after Sturridge picked up a thigh problem in a 2-2 draw with former club Manchester City in February.

“Daniel and I have spoken about it and he’s fine [about being dropped],” said Rodgers.

“He’s now coming into an ethos here which is very much about the team and he understands that.

“The team got a good result at Aston Villa and then he came on last weekend against West Ham and made a contribution.

“We are here to develop his game. At 23, he’s still a young player. The good thing is that he wants to learn.

“I think it’s just natural. He came into the club and made a real explosive start. Then he was hampered by a couple of injuries.

“We are trying to make sure that’s completely right to allow him to be as fit as he possibly can.

“We believe he’s going to be a great player for us, not only for now but for the future as well. He’s working very hard to fit into the team and the structure.”
