‘Liverpool can challenge for top-four spot but not Premier League title’

Former Liverpool defender Rob Jones says the Reds can challenge for a top-four finish this season

Rob Jones believes Liverpool aren’t Premier League title challengers – but has backed the Reds to finish in the top four this season.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have won their opening three top-flight games, beating Stoke City, Aston Villa and reigning champions Manchester United.

Jones was part of the last Liverpool side to pick up maximum points from their first three outings, and the former England international reckons the Reds have the strength to secure a return to the Champions League.

“We can’t get carried away but it’s so important to get off to a good start,” Jones told the Liverpool Echo.

“Now it’s all about keeping players fit and keeping that consistency. It’s too soon to be talking about a title challenge but there is no reason why we can’t get a Champions League place this season.

“Defensively, we look very solid. I think it was a good decision signing Simon Mignolet and moving on Pepe Reina.

“Pepe had been a great servant to Liverpool but mistakes had been slipping in over the previous couple of years and it had been costing us.

“I just think we were ready for a change and Mignolet has made a brilliant start. When a cross comes into the box I always feel confident that he’s going to catch it. If I’m confident watching on then I’m sure that confidence is shared by the defenders in front of him.”

He added: “At the other end, Sturridge has been outstanding. When we bought him I thought it was a brilliant buy and he hasn’t disappointed me.

“Brendan has nurtured him and got the best out of him. The way he’s throwing those step-overs, you can see he’s bubbling with confidence. With Suarez suspended, we needed Sturridge to deliver and he has done that.”
