Ian Ayre has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard for his unwavering loyalty to Liverpool after the midfielder penned a new two-year deal at Anfield.

The 33-year-old captain has agreed to remain at the Reds until 2015, with the club and its captain set to sit down and evaluate Gerrard’s situation at the end of his current deal.

Gerrard, who made his debut in 1998, has made 629 appearances for Liverpool, reaching two Champions League finals – winning in 2005, as well as lifting the FA Cup twice and triumphing in the League Cup three times.

And Liverpool managing director Ayre hailed Gerrard for his commitment to the Merseyside outfit despite the club’s failure to end its 23-year wait to win the Engish top-flight crown.

“It’s fantastic for everyone – the club, Steven and the fans,” Ayre told Liverpool’s website.

“He is – and always has been – such a big part of Liverpool Football Club. Particularly in this day and age, it’s rather unique to find a local player who has given his whole career to his club.

“We’re pleased today to add an extension to his existing agreement and that keeps him here until the end of his career.

“We’ve said what we’ll do in two years’ time is review it again and see how happy Steven is. We seem to always be happy with him, so hopefully we’ll just continue in that vein.”
