Brendan Rodgers hopes Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge can continue his goal-scoring run after Luis Suárez was banned for 10 games by the FA.

The Uruguayan received the lengthy suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanović in a 2-2 draw at Anfield last weekend, with the former Ajax forward opting not to appeal against the ban.

Sturridge was introduced as a half-time substitute in that stalemate with the Blues, combining with Suárez to score his sixth Reds goal before providing a teasing cross for the South American to head past Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in stoppage time.

Suárez’s ban leaves Sturridge and Fabio Borini as Liverpool’s only recognised forwards for the final four games of the Premier League season, and Rodgers hopes his £12m January signing can continue his current form.

“Daniel was excellent against Chelsea. When he came on he gave us a real threat with his pace and power. He scored with a great finish and could have had two or three more,” Rodgers said.

“Hopefully he can continue with that run of form right through to the end of the season and beyond.

“While Luis is out, we have to keep moving forward as a team. In adverse moments you find out about people’s character. I know there’s no shortage of character here and they need to demonstrate that.”
