Jurgen Klopp has underlined the importance of winning titles ahead of Liverpool FC’s clash against Chelsea FC in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday night.

The Reds will take on their domestic rivals Chelsea FC in Istanbul as the Champions League winners meet the Europa League winners for the first time in the new season.

Liverpool FC won the Champions League title thanks to a 2-0 victory over north London side Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid at the start of June as Klopp secured his first major trophy at the Anfield side.

Maurizio Sarri guided Chelsea FC to Europa League glory despite a difficult season in charge of the west London side after the Blues were 4-1 winners against Arsenal in the Baku final.

Liverpool FC lost to Manchester City on penalties in the Community Shield at Wembley earlier this month to miss out on the chance to win their second trophy under Klopp’s management.

The Reds started the new Premier League season with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City, while Chelsea FC suffered a 4-0 defeat by bitter rivals Manchester United.

Speaking at his news conference in Istanbul on Tuesday ahead of the Uefa Super Cup, Klopp explained why winning the trophy could have an impact on the rest of their season.

“I don’t know about the influence of one game on all of the other games, but winning football games always helps.

“It always helps winning titles; it is what everybody is asking us for, so it helps as well – but it has nothing to do with the start in the Premier League. Our start was absolutely OK.

“We played a good game against Man City, we gave them a proper game which is difficult enough against them. We could draw the game and lost on penalties and now we won 4-1 against Norwich with a very strong 60 minutes and a less strong last 30 minutes.

“Now, tomorrow night is a different competition, everything is different, everything is prepared for a final so obviously we have to make sure we are ready for a final.

“We have to make a few decisions about [the] line-up and stuff like this. It can be kind of a little bit unpredictable for the opponent as well because we don’t know how they [will] play, so why should they know how we [will] play, especially in the early stages of the season?

“We are here, everything is prepared: let’s go.”

Liverpool FC signed Sepp van den Berg, Harvey Elliott and Adrian this summer.
