Jurgen Klopp insists that he expected to see a mistake from Alisson in a Liverpool FC shirt at some point

Jurgen Klopp has suggested that he expected goalkeeper Alisson Becker to make a costly mistake for Liverpool FC sooner or later.

With Liverpool FC comfortably winning 2-0 in Saturday’s early kick-off, Alisson received a back pass and tried to beat Kelechi Iheanacho who wasn’t fooled and robbed the ball.

Iheanacho squared the ball to Rachid Ghezzal who tucked it home, and Klopp suggested he was not all that surprised by the mistake.

“I thought it [the mistake] would happen. I didn’t think it would happen during the next match,” Klopp said to BBC Sport.

“He knows it, we need to get used to it. We constantly get the ball to the keeper, but the player needs to learn there are other solutions.

“Joe (Gomez) could have cleared the ball, Alisson could have too. That is how it is. He is a fantastic goalkeeper, makes some fantastic saves.

“He didn’t do what he was supposed to but it’s all good.”

Brazilian international Alisson, a £56.25m signing from Roma this summer, was brought in as a playmaking goalkeeper who acts as a quarterback which he did so successful for his former club last season.

He is therefore liable to a lot of time on the ball, and with Premier League teams tending to press further up the pitch than their Serie A counterparts, Alisson faces a novel problem.

Premier League teams will now smell blood and will deploy a similar press on Liverpool FC in upcoming weeks to try and provoke a similar mistake.

It will be up to Alisson’s discretion to work out in which situations it would be best to clear his lines rather than try and create every time he receives the ball.

Leicester were ultimately unable to capitalise on the lifeline handed to them but Liverpool FC can consider themselves lucky that the Brazilian’s mistake was inconsequential this time.
