Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain admits he had extra motivation to see Liverpool FC win the Champions League to prevent Arsenal’s bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur from getting their hands on the trophy.

Liverpool FC were 2-0 winners against Spurs in the Madrid final on Saturday night thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi either side of half-time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was an unused substitute on the bench as Liverpool FC got their hands on the European Cup for a sixth time in their decorated history.

The 25-year-old spent most of the season sidelined after he suffered a season-ending knee injury during Liverpool FC’s 5-2 win over AS Roma in last season’s Champions League semi-finals.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has won over Liverpool FC supporters with his energy and enthusiasm since his £40m move to Anfield from Arsenal in the 2017 summer transfer window.

However, the England star hasn’t forgotten about his former colleagues, friends and fans at the north London side.

Liverpool FC’s victory over Tottenham prevented Spurs becoming the first north London club to win the Champions League.

And Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted that stopping Spurs to cheer up Arsenal fans after a difficult season under Unai Emery was on his mind ahead of the Champions League final.

“As former Gooners, we know what that one meant to all the Arsenal fans out there,” Oxlade-Chamberlain told his former Arsenal team-mate Per Mertesacker during an interview on DAZN as quoted by Metro.

“It was massive for us at Liverpool, but ‘Once a Gooner always a Gooner’ that’s what they say.

“I had a personal sort of feeling in that game that we needed to get that done for all the people I left at Arsenal, I know they were all willing us on to win that one so I’m happy that we could do it.”

Liverpool FC finished as Premier League runners up this term after finishing a point behind champions Manchester City.
