Rio Ferdinand has hailed Fabinho as Liverpool FC’s best player so far this season.

The Brazil international has featured in 12 of Liverpool FC’s 13 games in the Premier League, only missing their 2-1 win at Aston Villa when Adam Lallana deputised for him.

The 26-year-old handed Liverpool FC supporters a scare after he suffered a suspected ankle problem in the first half of their penultimate Champions League group-stage fixture against Napoli on Wednesday night.

Fabinho attempted to play through the pain barrier before Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum eventually replaced the defensive midfielder in the 19th minute.

Liverpool FC managed to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Napoli at Anfield after Croatia international Dejan Lovren cancelled out Dries Mertens’ opening goal.

However, Fabinho’s injury was described as a potentially “massive” blow to the club by Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with the Serie A side on Wednesday night.

Speaking to BT Sport before kick-off at Anfield about Fabinho’s importance to Liverpool FC, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said:

“He [Fabinho] has been their best player this season. He struggled in his first season but he’s adapted perfectly now.

“What I love about him… people go on about the tackles, but the way he reads the game and his awareness on the pitch is an art in itself and he does it as good as anyone at the moment.

“For a centre-half, he’s a dream. He locks down a part of the pitch. To be successful you need to do the ugly stuff.

“You need players like that, you can’t just have pretty players like Salah, Mane and Firmino. Fabinho is the guy who gives Liverpool the platform.”

Liverpool FC signed Fabinho in a £39m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2018 summer transfer window.

The Brazil midfielder had to be patient in the opening months of his Liverpool FC career before he established himself as Klopp’s first-choice holding midfielder.
