Gary Neville believes Liverpool would have won the Premier League title a couple of times in recent seasons if the Reds were able to defend properly.

Liverpool suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley after goals from Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min on Sunday afternoon.

The Merseyside outfit have already conceded 16 goals in nine Premier League games to raise serious questions about Klopp’s defence in the 2017-18 season.

The German coach took over the reins from Northern Irish coach Brendan Rodgers in October 2015 but Klopp has failed to improve their defensive issues.

Liverpool finished in second place in the Premier League table in 2013-14 but conceded 50 goals to undermine their title challenge despite producing the best attacking football in the English top flight with Luis Suarez in their ranks.

Former Manchester United defender Neville claimed that Liverpool would have won the title under Rodgers in 2013-14 and potentially challenged in other seasons if the Merseyside outfit were adept at defending their goal.

“The ultimate for Liverpool is to win the Premier League and I think a couple of times in the last five years – particularly that season under Brendan Rodgers – they should have won it if they’d defended half-properly,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“They’ve conceded 50, 48 and 50 goals over the last three years. They’ve conceded the most goals away from home in the Premier League this season. That’s wrong.”

Klopp signed Scotland international Andy Robertson in an £8m deal from Hull City in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table to secure a return to the Champions League.
