Ian Wright is backing Liverpool FC to win the Premier League title this season.
The Reds finished in second place in the Premier League table last term after Jurgen Klopp’s side finished just a point adrift of champions Manchester City.
Liverpool FC ended up behind Manchester City in the title race last season as the Citizens came from behind against Brighton to secure a victory on the final day of the campaign.
The Merseyside outfit’s only defeat came in a 2-1 loss to Pep Guardiola’s side at The Etihad in January, which ultimately proved the difference between the two teams.
The Reds paid the price for costly draws against West Ham, Leicester City, Manchester United and Everton in the second half of the campaign.
Klopp’s men started the new Premier League season with a 4-1 victory over promoted side Norwich City on Friday night before Manchester City were 5-0 winners at West Ham.
Former Arsenal striker Wright is backing Liverpool FC to win the Premier League title for the first time.
“Yeah I do [think they will they get 97 points], why not?” Wright told BBC Radio Five Live.
“The thing is they’ve done it before, can City do 98 again? Do 100 points again? You’d say yes, and are Liverpool going to chase them down due to the experienced they’ve gained? Yes.
“So if Manchester City get 100 points then I think Liverpool are capable of getting 99 points, and vice versa. I think Man City are the team to beat, but I’ve gone for Liverpool again [to win the title].”
Liverpool FC ended the 2018-19 season on a high note after the Merseyside outfit were 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but have finished in second place on four previous occasions in 2002, 2009, 2014 and 2018.
