Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says he welcomes Liverpool FC's title challenge
Ilkay Gundogan believes Manchester City and Liverpool FC can bring the best out of each other in the Premier League title race.
The Reds are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table following their 3-1 victory over top-six rivals Arsenal at Anfield last weekend.
Manchester City are two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side after the defending champions dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
Liverpool FC finished a point behind Manchester City in the title race last term after the Reds ended up on a record tally of 97 for a runner-up.
The Merseyside outfit only lost one game in the Premier League last season following a 2-1 defeat by Manchester City at The Etihad.
Manchester City midfielder Gundogan insists that the Citizens welcome Liverpool FC’s challenge as it raises the performance level of both teams.
“I think we should always put ourselves under pressure because we are so talented and such a good team that we want to win every game, so the pressure comes from inside,” Gundogan is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
“The fact that Liverpool does so well recently just shows that there is a team with a lot of quality that will also be a big contender for the season.
“That’s good for the league, maybe also good for us but also good for Liverpool that we are there so it’s going to be a fight.
“It’s not going to be easy so we have to be there, we have to win and that’s the game.”
Gundogan played under Liverpool FC manager Klopp during the Germany international’s stint at Borussia Dortmund before his move to Manchester City.
Liverpool FC won the Champions League title last season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Madrid showpiece to make amends for their Premier League disappointment.
Manchester City are still waiting to get their hands on the Champions League crown following their disappointments at the quarter-final stage in 2018 and 2019.
