Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool FC laid down a big marker in the title race by going to a top-six rival and securing three points after Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Chelsea FC.

Jurgen Klopp’s side managed to protect their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge following Manchester City’s 8-0 victory over Watford a day earlier.

Trent Alexander-Arnold broke the deadlock in the first half with a superb free-kick to give Liverpool FC the lead before Cesar Azpilicueta had a goal ruled out for offside.

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino doubled the away side’s lead minutes after Azpilicueta’s disallowed goal to put Liverpool FC in control of the Premier League clash.

Frank Lampard’s men rallied in the second half and N’Golo Kante scored a superb goal from outside the penalty area to halve the deficit.

However, the Champions League holders managed to see out the victory to restore their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

“It’s a big result,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the game.

“Manchester City and Liverpool will already be looking at each other’s fixtures when they go away to big six teams as it’s an opportunity to drop points.

“Both teams, whether they get there or not, have to aim for 100 points.

“You can only drop 14 points. A draw isn’t a good result. In the past, you’d go away to Arsenal, Manchester United and you’d be happy with a point.

“City have changed that – drawing away from home isn’t a good result.”

Liverpool FC will make the trip to Sheffield United in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds have scored six times but have already conceded five goals in the Premier League so far this season.

Liverpool FC finished in second spot and a point behind champions Manchester City last term.
