Jamie Carragher says Jurgen Klopp needs to start Joel Matip in the Liverpool FC side ahead of Joe Gomez.
The Premier League leaders were 3-1 winners against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday evening to cement their position at the top of the Premier League table.
Matip broke the deadlock in the first half with a header before Mohamed Salah scored twice after the break to seal a comfortable home win for the hosts.
The former Cameroon international started at centre-half alongside Virgil van Dijk for the second successive game, while Gomez was on the bench given Trent Alexander-Arnold started the Premier League clash at right-back.
Matip started alongside Van Dijk in the second half of the 2018-19 Premier League season after Gomez suffered a serious injury at Burnley back in November.
Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher believes Matip merits a place in the Reds team ahead of Gomez.
“I think this fella, because you’re alongside Virgil van Dijk, he doesn’t get talked about a lot,” Carragher told Sky Sports, as quoted by Metro. “That’s normal, the other fella next to him is a superstar.
“But I couldn’t believe he didn’t start the season. And his performances at the back end of last season were outstanding. And actually when he’s come in I think he’s actually made a difference to Liverpool.
“Obviously Joe Gomez can play right-back or centre-back, but for me at this moment it looks a bit more solid with Matip in there. He should be [first choice]. I think he is right now.”
“And you need that within a squad. I always feel in a team there should be seven or eight absolute starters who know they are playing as soon as they are fit and everyone knows they are playing, and there should always be three or four positions up for grabs.”
Liverpool FC will make the trip to Burnley in their next Premier League game in pursuit of a 13th successive win.
The Reds finished in second place in the Premier League table last term and a point adrift of Manchester City.
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but have finished as runners up in 2002, 2009, 2014 and 2018.
