Jason McAteer says Liverpool FC’s next five games will determine whether their season will be a success.

The Reds – who beat Leicester 2-1 on Saturday – are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time in their history.

Liverpool FC finished in second place and a point behind champions Manchester City last term despite losing just one game.

The Merseyside outfit have won all eight of their Premier League games so far this season to build a comfortable lead at the top of the table.

However, Liverpool FC are facing a tough run of fixtures once they return to top-flight action after the international break.

The Reds will make the trip to Manchester United on 20 October before Liverpool FC host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield a week later.

Liverpool FC will travel to Aston Villa on 2 November before Manchester City make the short journey to Merseyside on 10 November.

Speaking ahead of their home clash against Leicester City, McAteer explained why the next four weeks will be key for Liverpool FC.

“Liverpool have got Leicester, Manchester United, Tottenham and Man City in their next five league games, so that’s going to be a true test for them,” McAteer told the Racing Post.

“They’ve got so many games in such a short period, including Champions League games and a trip to Qatar for the World Club Cup which is bound to disrupt things.

“Christmas is always a heavy period and then we’re into January when injuries are picked up. But if Klopp can get through November and December with Liverpool sitting top – or even three or four points off Manchester City – then they will win the league.

“If they drop back eight points or ten points then it’s City’s to lose.”

Liverpool FC won their first major trophy under Klopp last season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid back in June.

The Reds have finished in second place on four different occasions in 2002, 2009, 2014 and 2018.
