John Barnes believes Liverpool FC are showing signs of potential Premier League champions.

The Reds are sitting at the top of the Premier League table with a small five-point advantage over their closest rivals Manchester City.

The Citizens handed Liverpool FC the momentum in midweek after a surprise 2-1 loss to former Reds boss Rafael Benitez and his Newcastle side at St James’ Park.

The Reds missed out on the chance to move seven points clear but Klopp’s side still managed to earn a point from a poor performance in a 1-1 stalemate with Leicester on Wednesday night.

Liverpool FC lost for the first time this season last month when Manchester City were 2-1 winners against the Premier League leaders.

The Merseyside outfit had hit top form ahead of the clash at The Etihad, but the Reds haven’t been at their fluid best since that loss.

However, Klopp’s side still managed to etch out narrow victories over Brighton and Crystal Palace to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Indeed, their stalemate with Leicester was the first time the Reds have failed to collect maximum points from a team outside the top six this season – a notable improvement on previous seasons.

Former Liverpool FC midfielder Barnes, who won the top-flight crown twice during his career, is encouraged by the Reds’ ability to grind out positive results this term.

“If you don’t play well, you’ve got to grind results out,” Barnes told The Sport Review in an exclusive interview.

“When they play well they win, but the problem in the past is they haven’t been able to win the so called easier games.

“Now, because we are much stronger defensively, we can play badly and win.

“That’s the sign of champions – or potential champions.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table in their last two seasons under the former Borussia Dortmund manager.

The Reds have made drastic improvements this season, helped by the arrival of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and to a lesser extent, Naby Keita.
