Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp was proud of his players despite their 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona on Wednesday night

Jurgen Klopp insists that he is proud of his brave Liverpool FC players despite their 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside outfit produced a good performance at Camp Nou but FC Barcelona made the visitors pay for not taking their chances when the Spanish side were on the back foot.

Uruguay international Luis Suarez broke the deadlock with a deft finish after Jordi Alba fed the former Liverpool FC striker the ball as he ran between Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk.

Lionel Messi netted FC Barcelona’s second goal in fortuitous circumstances but there was no element of luck when the home side’s captain netted a free-kick from 35 yards.

Liverpool FC had their own opportunities but Sadio Mane, James Milner and Mohamed Salah were guilty of wasting chances to find the net at Camp Nou.

The 18-time English champions can ill-afford to suffer from a Champions League hangover ahead of their trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Speaking at his post-match media conference, Klopp was defiant about his admiration for his players, saying:

“I said I am really proud of them, that I really liked the game.

“They don’t have to think about the next game against Barcelona, now we play Newcastle. That’s all our focus. We go to the hotel, have a proper sleep, get up in the morning, fly home and then prepare for Newcastle.

“Whatever happens, these boys, I couldn’t be more proud of them. I know the result and people who didn’t see the game will say strange things, we accept that easily.

“It’s just how they always strike back in these kind of games, how brave they are in these moments. I just like it. At the end it’s still a 3-0 – however I think about the game – and it does not change. But it’s OK. Let’s fly home and play Newcastle.”

Liverpool FC will host FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night.
