Martin Keown has defended Jurgen Klopp’s record at Liverpool following his second anniversary as manager at Anfield.

The Reds boss took over the reins at Anfield in October 2015 following Brendan Rodgers’ disappointing start to the Premier League season despite a summer of investment.

Klopp led Liverpool to the League Cup and Europa League finals in his first seven months in charge of the Merseyside outfit but the Reds lost to Manchester City and Sevilla.

The German coach signed seven players in the 2016 summer transfer window to overhaul the Liverpool squad before the Reds secured fourth spot in the Premier League table.

Liverpool missed out on Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita in the most recent transfer window but the Reds still managed to add four new players to his squad.

But the Merseyside outfit have struggled in the current Premier League campaign to raise questions about Klopp’s progress at Anfield since taking over from Rodgers.

Former Arsenal defender Keown is adamant that Klopp has helped to improve Liverpool despite criticism of his record over the past 24 months.

“Jurgen Klopp has steered Liverpool back into the Champions League and has reached the Europa League final,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“He understands and has picked up the mindset of the Liverpudlians and their massive passion for football.

“Klopp knows the traditions of the club. Liverpool were giants of European football and the manager lives with those pressures quite well.

“If I could put my boots back on and play for one current manager, it would be him.”

Liverpool are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time after finishing in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
