Lionel Messi has revealed that his son Mateo pretended to be a Liverpool FC player after the Premier League club beat FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final last month.

Liverpool FC were crowned Champions League winner last weekend after Jurgen Klopp’s side were 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur in the Madrid final.

The Reds reached their second successive Champions League final following a thrilling 4-3 aggregate victory over FC Barcelona in the last four.

The Merseyside outfit lost 3-0 to FC Barcelona at Camp Nou before goals from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum sealed a 4-0 win at Anfield.

Liverpool FC have never lost to FC Barcelona over two legs in the Champions League despite having faced Messi four times in the past 12 years.

FC Barcelona star Messi revealed that his son Tiago likes to pretend to be a Liverpool FC player after their victory over the Spanish side.

“Tiago does not miss a match,” Messi told TyC Sports, as quoted by Metro. “Mateo loves football, he wears all the shirts.

“But we played together at home he told me, ‘I’m from Liverpool… they beat you’, he also did it with Valencia [after the Copa del Rey final]… ‘Valencia beat you, I’m from Valencia’.’

“When we’re watching TV he will cheer Madrid’s goals to annoy his brother, he is the one who is a Madrid fan.”

Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham saw the Reds lift the trophy for the sixth time in their history after their previous triumph in 2005.

Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won the Champions League more times than Liverpool FC.

Klopp’s men finished in second place in the Premier League table last season after ending up a point adrift of champions Manchester City.
