Man City manager Pep Guardiola expects a tough title battle with Liverpool FC again next term
Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester City will find it hard to retain the Premier League title next term amid competition from Liverpool FC.
The Citizens were crowned Premier League champions in successive seasons for the first time in the club’s history last term.
Manchester City managed to finished a point ahead of Liverpool FC in what was a highly competitive title race.
Liverpool FC only lost one game in the Premier League last term, which was less than any other team including the champions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men only suffered defeat in a 2-1 loss at Manchester City at the start of January.
The Reds finished the season as champions of Europe after Liverpool FC were 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid.
Manchester City manager Guardiola has now spoken about the challenge that the defending champions will face from Liverpool FC in the title race next term.
“Winning the Premier League is very hard, and I speak from experience,” Guardiola is quoted as saying by Metro.
“This is the first time in eleven years that a team has won two consecutive league titles, which Barcelona has done many times [in La Liga].
“I am certain Liverpool are eager to win the Premier League.
“Liverpool have not won the league for 30 years, and we all saw what a team Liverpool were this year.”
Liverpool FC have finished in second place on four occasions under four different managers.
The Reds ended up as runners up in 2002, 2009, 2014 and 2018.
Liverpool FC have only signed 17-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg in the summer transfer window so far.
The Merseyside outfit finished the season with the best defensive record, the PFA player of the year Virgil van Dijk and joint top goal-scorers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
