Jurgen Klopp ‘happy’ 26-year-old was at Liverpool FC when he was appointed
The Liverpool FC manager raves about Roberto Firmino's form over the past couple of months
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he was delighted that Roberto Firmino was at Liverpool FC when he took over the reins in October 2015.
The Brazil international has been in prolific form over the past couple of months with six goals and three assists in his past 10 games.
Firmino is enjoying his best season at Liverpool FC since his £29m move to Anfield from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The South American has scored 19 goals in 34 games in all competitions in the 2017-18 season, including a brilliant goal and assist in a 2-0 win at Southampton last weekend.
Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers signed Firmino but the former Borussia Dortmund head coach is responsible for bringing out the best in the 25-year-old attacker.
Asked whether Firmino has stepped up following Philippe Coutinho’s £142m move to Barcelona last month ahead of Liverpool FC’s trip to Porto, Klopp said:
“I don’t think so, not anymore. I don’t know what other people think about Roberto Firmino.
“I can imagine a bit because you ask me about it. I have no idea.
“I don’t think he has stepped up but maybe it is more obvious because his situations are not overshadowed by Phil Coutinho’s situations.
“He’s a very important player and he doesn’t always have to be the standout player. As often as he can be, that’s good.
“People with a football brain judge him right. That’s how it is.
“For me we spoke about Roberto weeks ago, months ago, whenever.
“When I came in I said immediately that I was happy he was here.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table but just two points adrift of Manchester United in second spot.
The Reds signed the Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
Liverpool FC haven’t won a trophy under Klopp since the German took over the reins from Rodgers back in October 2015.
