Phil Thompson has rubbished Jose Mourinho’s suggestion that Liverpool FC are trying to buy the Premier League title this season.
The Reds have recruited four new players in the summer transfer window since their demoralising 3-1 loss to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
Liverpool FC signed AS Monaco star Fabinho in a £39m deal at the start of the summer transfer window before the arrival of RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita to improve their options in the middle of the park.
The Merseyside outfit won the race to sign talented Swiss playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri in a £13.5m from Stoke City despite interest from Manchester United boss Mourinho.
Liverpool FC finally tackled an obvious weakness in their team under Klopp with the £67m addition of Brazil number one Alisson Becker from Serie A giants AS Roma.
Mourinho suggested in an interview with Sky Sports that Liverpool FC’s investment amounted to trying to buy the Premier League title ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
However, former Liverpool FC defender Thompson moved quickly to refute the suggestion.
“Pot and kettle? Oh my goodness,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“You always buy what you can afford and it’s net spend at the end of the day. Our net spend compared to United’s net spend is massively different.
“How can he say that? Is he just trying to wind people up because this is Jose? Liverpool trying to buy the title? Oh my goodness, I can accept that from some other clubs and managers, but not from Jose Mourinho.
“Just because we’ve spent some money this summer? It was absolutely outrageous comments coming from Mourinho, whose bought titles everywhere he’s gone.”
Liverpool FC were 4-0 winners against West Ham United in their opening Premier League fixture last weekend.
