Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk insists he was never fazed by the size of his transfer fee
Virgil van Dijk has insisted that his transfer fee has never affected the Liverpool FC defender.
The Netherlands international is no longer the most expensive defender in the world after Manchester United signed Harry Maguire in an £80m deal from Leicester City last week.
Van Dijk completed a switch to Liverpool FC from Southampton in a £75m move in the 2018 January transfer window following months of speculation surrounding the Dutch defender.
The 28-year-old has wasted no time justifying his huge transfer fee after Van Dijk transformed the Liverpool FC defence into the best in the Premier League.
The Liverpool FC star was named the PFA player of the year last term after the Reds conceded a mere 22 goals in 38 games – and Van Dijk won man of the match in their 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid.
Van Dijk has insisted that his transfer fee was never part of his thinking as the Liverpool FC star enters his second full season as a Red.
“It wasn’t a big issue for me. It’s something you don’t have an influence on,” Van Dijk said on Tuesday ahead of the Uefa Super Cup.
“It happens, it’s the market and the only thing you can do is put your head down and start playing, give everything for the team.
“That’s what I did and it worked so far, I’ll just try to keep doing that, keep progressing and be a better player.”
Van Dijk got on the score-sheet in Liverpool FC’s 4-1 victory over promoted side Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night.
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table ahead of their trip to Southampton in their next top-flight game at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
