Sky Sports pundit: Liverpool FC star can become ‘one of the buys of the century’
Liverpool FC legend Phil Thompson believes Virgil van Dijk is the leading contender for the PFA player of the year
Virgil van Dijk will go down as “one of the buys of the century” if Liverpool FC win the Premier League this season, Phil Thompson has claimed.
The Merseyside outfit are level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City following a 3-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend.
Van Dijk helped Liverpool FC to keep their 14th clean sheet of the Premier League campaign to get their title bid back on track.
Jurgen Klopp’s back four have the best defensive record in the top flight this term after conceding a mere 15 goals in 26 outings.
Liverpool FC spent a club record £75m fee to secure the signing of Van Dijk from Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window.
The Reds were initially ridiculed for making the Netherlands international the most expensive defender in the world given his lack of experience in top level football.
But Van Dijk has exerted his influence on Klopp’s team to transform Liverpool FC from top-four contenders into title challengers.
Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson believes Van Dijk is the leading contender for the PFA player of the year award.
“I think Virgil van Dijk has to be made Player of the Year,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“With Liverpool top of the league, it is real value for how he has played. He has been absolutely fantastic.
“If they can win the league, it will be one of the buys of the century, but he has been the most consistent.”
Van Dijk’s team-mate Mohamed Salah won the PFA player of the year award last season after the Egypt international scored 32 times in his first full season in the Premier League.
Liverpool FC will take on Manchester United in their next Premier League game on 24 February.
