Virgil van Dijk has admitted that he’s grateful he doesn’t have to defend against team-mate Roberto Firmino after the Liverpool FC forward starred in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

Jurgen Klopp’s initial plan was to give Firmino a rest after the forward returned from international duty with Brazil with little time to prepare for the visit of Newcastle.

The Reds boss was eager to protect the South American striker ahead of Tuesday night’s clash against Serie A side Napoli in Naples.

However, Firmino was required in the first half to replace Divock Origi, who suffered an ankle problem.

With his second touch, Firmino teed up Sadio Mane to score his second goal of the Premier League clash before half-time.

Firmino produced two more moments of brilliant to create chances for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

The Brazilian star finally got his second assist when he produced a cunning back heel to tee up Mohamed Salah to make it 3-1.

Firmino won the man of the match award for his impressive display in 60 minutes of action at Anfield.

Liverpool FC star Van Dijk admitted that he wouldn’t like to mark Firmino.

“He’s a very important player for all of us,” Van Dijk told BT Sport.

“I know how difficult it is for a centre-back if the striker is dropping – you don’t want to go as a central defender. He is making life difficult for any defender in the world.

“He is so good and I’m very happy he’s in my team.”

Liverpool FC will make the trip Napoli in their first Champions League game since winning their sixth European crown last term.
