Virgil van Dijk gives verdict on Joe Gomez’s display in Liverpool FC’s 4-1 win
Virgil van Dijk has his say on Joe Gomez's display in Liverpool FC's 4-1 victory over Norwich on Friday night

Virgil van Dijk praised Joe Gomez for a good performance in Liverpool FC’s 4-1 victory over Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night.
Jurgen Klopp opted to start Gomez alongside Van Dijk despite Joel Matip’s impressive performances in the second half of the 2018-19 season.
The former Schalke 04 defender was part of the Liverpool FC team that won the Champions League title thanks to a 2-0 win over Spurs in Madrid.
Gomez’s performance in Liverpool FC’s Premier League opener did attract some criticism as the Reds looked a little ragged at the back.
The Reds were unable to keep a clean sheet after Teemu Pukka netted a second-half goal.
However, Van Dijk has spoken out in support of Gomez after Liverpool FC’s comfortable win against the promoted side on Friday night.
“I think Joe did well against Norwich and he is a fantastic player,” Van Dijk told the Liverpool Echo.
“We have a lot of centre backs walking around at the moment – everyone is fit so the manager has to make a decision.
“I’m just happy for him that he’s fit and playing at a high level.
“Hopefully he will just keep improving.”
Klopp will have to decide between Gomez and Matip when Liverpool FC take on Chelsea FC in the Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
The Reds will make the trip to Southampton in their next Premier League fixture at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool FC signed 17-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg, Fulham teenager Harvey Elliott and West Ham goalkeeper Adrian in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit finished in second place in the Premier League table last term.
