Rio Ferdinand: Why Liverpool FC can sign Virgil van Dijk in January
The Man United legend believes Liverpool FC will find it easier to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in January

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool FC have a better chance of signing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in January.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool FC were rumoured to be on the brink of completing a deal to sign Van Dijk in June to prompt excitement amongst Reds fans.
However, the Merseyside outfit were forced to issue an embarrassing statement apologising to Southampton for their pursuit of Van Dijk.
Speculation continued to link Liverpool FC with Van Dijk but no deal was agreed despite the 26-year-old handing in a transfer request.
Liverpool’s defence has been regularly criticised this term following heavy losses at title rivals Manchester City and Totteham Hotspur.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, has returned to the Southampton starting line-up but the ex-Celtic man hasn’t managed to recapture his best form at St Mary’s.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand suggested that Liverpool FC could finally sign Van Dijk in the summer transfer window.
“I think the one that is gettable. I’ve liked him since his Celtic days,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“It has affected his form this season too.
“They may have a better chance of getting him in January. He isn’t as important to Southampton this season.”
Liverpool were 5-1 winners against Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend before a 7-0 victory over Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night.
