Michael Owen is backing Liverpool FC and Manchester City to play out a scoring draw in Sunday’s Community Shield clash at Wembley.

The Reds and the Citizens are preparing to go head to head for the first piece of silverware on offer this season as they look to start the new campaign in a positive way.

Liverpool FC will be looking to gain some momentum early on in the campaign after they ended up second and just a point behind Manchester City in the Premier League table last term.

Manchester City are aiming to defend their Premier League title for the third straight year under Pep Guardiola as the Citizens look to continue their impressive form.

Former Liverpool FC striker Owen has admitted that he has been struggling to split the two teams ahead of Sunday’s showdown, meaning that he feels the game will go down to penalties.

Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “I feel there will be plenty of chances at both ends in what is likely to be an entertaining start to the new season.

“I was out in China recently where I witnessed City first-hand and it was hard not to be impressed by Pep Guardiola’s champions with Kevin de Bruyne looking particularly sharp.

“The Reds are hopeful of having Mohammad Salah and Roberto Firmino available after their exploits in the African Cup of Nations and Copa America respectively over the summer.

“Jurgen Klopp will monitor their fitness before deciding his starting line-up at Wembley, but he will be delighted to have them back in the fold although Sadio Mane is not due back from his short holiday until Monday.

“I’m finding it hard to split the teams but would be disappointed if we didn’t see goals at both ends in this year’s Community Shield.”

Liverpool FC ended last season on a high by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final back in June.

The Reds concluded their pre-season preparations on a positive note thanks to a 3-1 win over Lyon on Wednesday as they now turn their attentions towards getting ready for their trip to Wembley.
