Gary Neville believes Manchester City need to seize their opportunity to overhaul Liverpool FC should the Reds struggle with the emotion of the Premier League title race.

The Reds were 4-3 winners against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday afternoon to hoist themselves seven points clear of the defending champions in the title race.

Liverpool FC had to come from behind to seal three points as goals from each of their front three Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane secured a thrilling win.

Manchester City closed the gap to four points when Pep Guardiola’s men were 3-0 comfortable winners against Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon.

The Citizens have coped with the pressure of playing after Liverpool FC in the last two Premier League weekends to ensure the gap remains at three points.

Liverpool FC topped the Premier League table on Christmas Day and the last team to lead the standings on the 25 December but fail to win the title was Brendan Rodgers’ side in 2013-14.

Steven Gerrard and company looked on course to win their first Premier League crown after a 3-2 victory over Manchester City in April 2014.

However, the Merseyside outfit were unable to hold their nerve and finished the season four points behind Manuel Pellegrini’s champions.

Former Manchester United defender Neville says Manchester City need to be prepared to capitalise if Liverpool FC become overwhelmed by the title race.

“The emotion surrounding a Liverpool title run-in, like we saw a few years ago, is going to come again,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.

“It’s a huge club, having not won it for well over 25 years and the fact it means so much, Jurgen Klopp brings that sort of passion too… that moment is coming to come where it gets really ramped up.

“I interviewed Klopp a few weeks ago and he plays it down, but he’s been here before with Dortmund. A lot of the players haven’t, a lot haven’t been through a title run-in with Liverpool.

“City will want to play on their experience and composure and it does count, but you’ve got to be in there, neck and neck, and City will want to make sure going into April and May, the last six or seven games, Liverpool are under the maximum pressure, which means level or just in front.

“Then Liverpool will have a lot of questions to answer.”
