Jose Mourinho told Man United can make ‘massive statement’ at Liverpool FC
The Manchester United team have a chance to lay down their first marker in the title race at Liverpool, according to Alan Smith
Alan Smith believes Manchester United will make a “massive statement” in the Premier League title race if Jose Mourinho’s men win at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table and level on points with current leaders Manchester United following seven games in the 2017-18 season.
The 20-time English champions have won six of their opening seven Premier League games and a 2-2 draw at Stoke City is the only blemish on their record.
Manchester United have scored 21 goals and have kept six clean sheets but haven’t been pitted against a traditional rival in the opening weeks of the season.
Their title rivals Manchester City were impressive 5-0 winners against Liverpool at The Etihad last month, although Sadio Mane’s first-half sending off helped the Citizens’ cause.
Pep Guardiola’s men were even more impressive in a 1-0 win against defending Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Former Arsenal striker Smith warned Manchester United that Mourinho’s side have the chance to lay down their first marker in the title race.
“People are saying Man United haven’t played anyone good yet. They are playing Liverpool now,” Smith told The Debate on Sky Sports on Wednesday night.
“Whatever you think of Liverpool’s title credentials, if Manchester United could come away with a win, that would be a massive statement.”
Manchester United are looking to win their first Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on the top-flight trophy for the final time.
