John Barnes is backing Liverpool to beat Manchester United in their crunch Premier League meeting at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils are one of the Premier League’s form teams following a return of six goals and one stalemate in their opening seven fixtures in the English top flight.
Manchester United are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after scoring 21 goals and keeping six clean sheets so far.
Jose Mourinho’s side are favourites heading into the north-west derby at Anfield given Liverpool have only managed to win one of their last seven games in all competitions.
The Reds have only managed to record one Premier League win since Liverpool were emphatic 4-0 winners against top-four rivals Arsenal at Anfield in their final game of August.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have the firepower to cause Manchester United problems but the Liverpool attack have been misfiring in recent weeks to further underline their struggles at the back.
Ex Liverpool midfielder Barnes believes Klopp’s men will beat Manchester United this weekend despite their inconsistent performances so far this season.
“Why I think Liverpool will win this is because of what they have demonstrated against all of the top five teams, apart from Manchester City when they went down to ten men and lost 5-0,” Barnes told talkSPORT.
“They have had the upper hand against all of the top five teams because of the nature of the way those games are played.
“They are very open, they are very attack-minded – whereby one team attacks and leaves the defence to defend for themselves..”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term and ended up two spots above Manchester United.
