Jason McAteer believes Mohamed Salah has work to do to emulate Luis Suarez at Liverpool FC
Jason McAteer has admitted that Mohamed Salah still hasn’t reached Luis Suarez’s levels at Liverpool FC.
The Reds signed Salah in a £39m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma in the 2017 summer transfer window.
The Egypt international’s move was met with some scepticism given his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge in 2014.
Salah went away and made improvements at Fiorentina and AS Roma before his lucrative switch to Liverpool FC.
The 25-year-old scored 32 times in 36 games in the Premier League this season to finish at the top of the division’s goal-scoring charts.
Salah has netted 10 goals in the Champions League to help the Merseyside outfit reach the Champions League final.
The African’s 32-goal haul in the English top flight to break Suarez’s club record of 31 goals in a Premier League campaign.
Former Liverpool FC star McAteer explained why Salah has work to do to reach Suarez’s levels at the Anfield outfit.
“You can’t get away from the stats that Mo has but I’d still buy Suarez over Salah,” McAteer told 888sport.
“Don’t get me wrong Mo has had a brilliant season but Suarez has the x-factor. Salah is a little bit predictable – you know what he’s going to do but you still can’t stop it – but Suarez scores all kinds of goals: he could shoot from the halfway line or go past three or four players; he could bend one into the corner or put away a tap-in or score an overhead kick.
“You didn’t know what you were going to get and what I loved most about him was his appetite. I’m not saying Mo doesn’t have that too but it comes across differently. With Suarez he was a real fighter and you could tell he was from the streets. Mo doesn’t have that same glint in his eye.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table this season to secure a return to the Champions League for the second successive season.
The Reds haven’t won the Champions League title since 2005 when the Merseyside outfit beat AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.
