Phil Thompson believes that Liverpool FC’s signing of Alisson Becker could end up being one of the transfers of the year.

The Reds completed a deal to bring the goalkeeper to Anfield from AS Roma last month after relentless speculation linking the Brazilian to the Merseyside outfit.

Alisson will be hoping to hold down the number one spot at the Merseyside outfit this season as he bids to try and help Liverpool FC establish themselves as one of the main contenders for the Premier League title.

The goalkeeper was swiftly brought in after Loris Karius came in for intense criticism following his Champions League final nightmare.

And Thompson believes that Liverpool FC’s move to bring in Alisson could end up being a crucial one come the end of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: What we are really pleased about is the goalkeeping situation.

“Jurgen was very, very protective of both his goalkeepers, certainly after the Champions League final.

“But we all thought this had to be nailed down and there has to be a change. And he did it and he spent very, very big. That was fantastic and it gives everyone a lift. And not just the fans, the team and the players too.

“So that is a massive area and if Liverpool go on and win the league title, he will be the signing of the window. We have seen how well David de Gea has done at Man United and the points that he saves. That was one are that needed to be sorted.

“This fella has kept Ederson out of the national side, so he is a good goalkeeper. But no matter how much you have paid – not just for a ‘keeper, but an outfield player – you just do not know what they are going to be like and how they will react in the Premier League, particularly when they come from abroad.

“That is why I am saying, if he copes, does the business and saves us points, it could be a fantastic position.”

Liverpool FC ended up in fourth place in the Premier League table last season and without a trophy after they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The Merseyside outfit are aiming to be one of the main contenders for the Premier League title as they aim to win their first trophy since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment back in 2015.
