Dejan Lovren has insisted that he is his own harshest critic when he makes mistakes in a Liverpool FC shirt.

The Croatian defender has found himself under the spotlight in recent weeks and he was called out inadvertently playing Harry Kane onside during Liverpool FC’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Lovren has been far from convincing in a Liverpool FC shirt this season and he is set to face increased competition for a place in the starting line-up following the Reds’ signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer window.

However, the defender insists that he is his own harshest critic and that he is always looking at ways he can improve his game.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Lovren said: “I’m my biggest critic of myself when I make mistakes.

“I don’t talk to anyone for a couple of days – this is me. This is the punishment for myself.

“What do other people think? I’m not bothered. What’s important is what the manager says because he is the man in charge of me. If he’s positive about me then that’s confirmation for myself that I’m one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

“When you go 18 games unbeaten people will say ‘wow he’s really good’ but when you make mistakes they will point the finger at the back four.”

Liverpool FC return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they travel to FC Porto for the first leg of their last 16 clash against the Portuguese side.

The Reds are aiming to at least finish in the top four once again this season as they bid to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp led the Reds to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League table last term.
