Steven Gerrard sends clear message to Liverpool FC about Philippe Coutinho
Steven Gerrard tells Liverpool FC that they must do whatever they can to keep Philippe Coutinho at the club
Steven Gerrard has told Liverpool that they must whatever they can to keep hold of Philippe Coutinho for as long as possible.
The Brazilian playmaker has been reintegrated into the first team at Anfield in recent weeks after his future was a relentless source of speculation throughout the summer transfer window.
Coutinho was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona during the final few days of the window and the 25-year-old even handed in a transfer request in a bid to try and force through a switch.
However, Liverpool held firm and refused to sell the talismanic forward, who signed a new five-year contract with the Reds back in January.
Gerrard is a huge admirer of the Brazil international after having played alongside him during the final few years of his career at Anfield.
And the Liverpool legend has given his honest thoughts about the Brazilian after he helped to inspire Liverpool to a thrilling 3-2 win over Leicester City at Anfield on Saturday.
Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Gerrard said: “He contributes in the vital moments of the game.
“He produces moments of genius and he’s a world-class footballer. Barcelona don’t come for you for that amount of money unless you’re world class.
“I’ve played and trained with him, I know what he’s all about.
“Liverpool need tot try and keep hold of him for as long as possible because with him in the team and when Sadio Mane comes back, we know they will score and be one of the most exciting teams to watch in his league.”
Liverpool are currently gearing up for their Champions League clash against Spartak Moscow in Russia on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were held to a 2-2 draw by Sevilla in their first Champions League game earlier this month.
