BBC Sport pundit hails ‘amazing’ improvement of Liverpool FC star
Garth Crooks heaps praise on Joel Matip following his solid start to the season with Liverpool FC
Garth Crooks has heaped praise on Joel Matip for the “amazing” improvement he has shown at Liverpool FC in recent months.
Matip has been a regular fixture in the first team for the Reds this term and he has been starting alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool FC’s defence.
The 28-year-old has started six of Liverpool FC’s seven Premier League games so far this season and he has netted one goal so far for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Matip helped the Reds to keep a clean sheet as Liverpool FC claimed a 1-0 win away to Sheffield United on Saturday lunchtime to continue their brilliant start to the season.
And BBC Sport pundit Crooks has been particularly impressed by Matip’s recent performances alongside Van Dijk.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “The improvement in Matip’s performances since the arrival of Van Dijk at Liverpool has been amazing.
“I have said before that Matip has been prepared to do a lot of the heavy lifting in Liverpool’s defence – a role that can be physically demanding at times but one that is immensely rewarding too.
“Against Sheffield United, it was his ball distribution that impressed me. Making passes into strikers from deep positions can be a risky affair and takes courage.
“Matip seems to be fearless at the moment. Bad news for Joe Gomez.”
Liverpool FC are now preparing for their Champions League clash against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night as they look to pick up their first points of the season in Europe’s elite club competition.
The Reds suffered a 2-0 loss to Napoli in their opening Champions League game last month and will be keen to return to winning ways when they host the Austrian side at Anfield this week.
