Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool FC have been in better form than he imagined following the exit of Philippe Coutinho last year.

The talismanic playmaker left Liverpool FC to sign for FC Barcelona in the January 2018 transfer window.

The Reds brought in Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the same month, but opted not to sign an out-and-out replacement for Coutinho in the transfer window.

Despite Coutinho’s exit, Liverpool FC have gone from strength to strength, with the Reds currently in the race to win the Premier League title having reached the Champions League final last season.

And Klopp has openly admitted that Liverpool FC have been performing better than he would have expected following Coutinho’s exit from Anfield last year.

Speaking at a news conference before Liverpool FC’s clash with FC Barcelona on Wednesday night, Klopp said: “Yes, we miss Coutinho, a lot, because he is a world-class player and I loved working with him.

“But we had to deal without him and we really did well.

“When I first heard he wanted to go to Barcelona, I didn’t imagine we could be that good [without him]. But we did, it was all good for both sides.”

Liverpool FC will now switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their clash with Newcastle United on Saturday night at St James’ Park.

The Reds – who are one point behind leaders Manchester City with two games to play – are still aiming to try and win their first major trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015.
