Jermaine Jenas has questioned Liverpool’s decision to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit made the England international their second-most expensive signing of all-time after Oxlade-Chamberlain completed a £40m switch to Liverpool from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
The 24-year-old opted to move to Anfield ahead of signing a new deal with the Gunners or a switch to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
Oxlade-Chamberlain was reported to have chosen Liverpool ahead of Chelsea as a result of his desire to establish himself in a central midfield role.
But the England star has found his first-team opportunities limited at the Merseyside outfit and hasn’t started a Premier League game for his new club.
Indeed, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s only start came in a 2-0 loss to Leicester City in the League Cup as Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum continue to occupy the central midfield roles in Klopp’s team.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jenas questioned why Klopp spent such a big fee on Oxlade-Chamberlain when the Liverpool manager already had enough options in midfield.
“They filled positions that they had covered,” Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“It made no sense to spend £40m on Oxlade-Chamberlain. It baffles me.”
Liverpool signed Hull City defender Andy Robertson, Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke and AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window.
